TMJ & Chronic Pain Treatment

Neuromuscular dentistry treats overall oral health by determining how your muscles, teeth, and joints all work together.  We treat a variety of symptoms by determining your “muscle friendly” bite and then adjusting your bite to that position.

Common symptoms treatable by Neuromuscular Dentistry:

  • TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint and Muscle Disorders)
  • Headaches
  • Jaw joint pain, noise, or clicking
  • Ear congestion
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in ears
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Loose teeth
  • Clenching or grinding teeth
  • Facial pain
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Chewing difficulties
  • Neck pain
  • Postural problems
  • Tingling of fingertips
  • Hot and cold sensitivity of teeth
  • Nervousness or insomnia

In phase I, a “muscle friendly” bit is achieved by wearing an orthotic (retainer) that is custom designed and worn over your teeth to maintain your new bite position. Your wear this appliance for a prescribed period of time to verify that this new jaw position relieves or reduces your symptoms.  Then you may elect to proceed with phase II treatment and have your natural teeth treated to permanently maintain this new bite position.

To make your appointment as relaxing as possible, Dr. Dangstorp uses a myomonitor, which gently delivers electrical stimulation to relax your muscles.  A chiropractor or massage therapist may also be recommended for your treatment.
